    Nature's Builders

Beavers are some of the busiest builders in nature. Using only their strong front teeth, they cut down small trees and drag the branches into a stream. First they build a dam to slow the water down. The dam turns part of the stream into a still, deep pond. Then, in the middle of the pond, the beavers pile up sticks and mud to make a home called a lodge. The only doors to the lodge are underwater, which keeps foxes and wolves out. Inside, the lodge stays dry and warm all winter long.

Why are the lodge's doors underwater?

    From Field to Table

The bread on your table starts as a field of wheat. In summer, giant machines called combines cut the wheat and separate the grain from the stalks. Trucks carry the grain to a mill, where heavy rollers crush it into soft white flour. At the bakery, the baker mixes flour with water, salt, and yeast. The yeast is alive: it eats sugars in the dough and breathes out tiny bubbles of gas. Those bubbles are what make the bread rise, giving each loaf its light, airy inside.

    The bread rises because —

    (A)the flour is very soft
    (B)the oven shakes the pan
(C)yeast makes bubbles of gas in the dough
    (D)salt melts in the water

    The Light That Never Slept

Long before ships had radios, sailors depended on lighthouses. Each lighthouse flashed its light in its own special pattern, like a name written in light. A captain far from shore could count the flashes, check a chart, and know exactly which coast was near. Lighthouse keepers lived beside the tower all year. Every evening they climbed the winding stairs to light the great lamp, and every morning they climbed again to put it out. It was lonely work, but keepers were proud: their light kept strangers they would never meet safe from the rocks.

A good title for this passage is —

(A)The Light That Kept Sailors Safe
    (B)Building Stone Towers
    (C)How Radios Work
    (D)A Captain's Breakfast
