How to prepare for the Texas STAAR test
What the STAAR covers by grade, how it's scored, and how to help your child prepare without the stress.
The STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) measures grade-level mastery of the Texas standards (TEKS). Here's the parent's view.
What's tested by grade
- Grades 3–8: Reading Language Arts and Math every year.
- Grade 5 & 8: Science added; Grade 8: Social Studies added.
- It's now online and includes a mix of multiple-choice and open-response questions.
How it's scored
Performance is reported as Did Not Meet, Approaches, Meets, or Masters grade level. 'Meets' is the on-track benchmark; 'Masters' indicates strong command.
Preparing calmly
- Practice aligned to the TEKS for your child's grade.
- Get familiar with the online tools and question formats.
- Focus practice on the weakest reporting categories.
- Keep it low-stress — short, regular sessions beat cramming.
