Free STAAR practice tests online — which sites are best?
The best free STAAR practice tests are TEA's own released tests. Every spring's STAAR for grades 3–8 is released and runs free on the Texas Assessment Practice Test Site with a guest login, in the same online platform students use on test day — real questions, real question types, with answer keys and explanations. After those, good free sources for more practice include Khan Academy's TEKS courses, Zearn (grades K–5), Mometrix and Effortless Math question sets, and iPrepGenius's no-signup STAAR practice by grade.

1. TEA's released STAAR tests (start here)
TEA releases each spring's STAAR tests. Since the 2022–23 school year STAAR is given primarily online, and TEA now publishes released tests online rather than as PDFs — you take them on the Practice Test Site. For each released year TEA's STAAR released test questions page also posts the answer key, an item-rationale document explaining each answer, and a file listing which TEKS student expectation each question tests.
How to open one
- Go to the Texas Assessment practice tests page and open the practice test site.
- Choose Continue as Guest — no account or student ID needed.
- Pick the grade, then a released test under “STAAR Released Tests” (when we checked grade 5, math and reading were listed for 2018, 2019 and 2021–2026, with Spanish versions for most years).
- Why it's the best: real STAAR questions, in the STAAR Online Testing Platform used for the real test, with its tools and question types.
- The catch: there are only a few forms per grade, and once your child has seen them they stop being a fair measure. Save one for near test day.
2. Texas Assessment practice sets for the new question types
Since spring 2023, STAAR can include non-multiple-choice questions, and TEA caps multiple choice at no more than 75% of a test's points. For math that means question types such as equation editor, text entry, graphing, inline choice, hot spot, drag-and-drop and multiselect (plus fraction models in grades 3–5 and number lines and match tables in grades 6–8). The same guest site has short practice sets — for example “New Item Types” sets — built to introduce them. Nothing else on this page reproduces these formats exactly, including us.

- Baseline: one released test from the most recent year, timed, on the Practice Test Site.
- Diagnose: check the misses against TEA's answer key and student-expectation file to find the weak reporting categories.
- Practise: short regular sessions on those skills with any free source above.
- Formats: one or two “New Item Types” practice sets so nothing on screen is a surprise.
- Check: a second released test a few weeks before test day.

Where can I find free STAAR practice tests?
TEA publishes every spring’s STAAR tests as released tests. They run free on the Texas Assessment Practice Test Site — choose “Continue as Guest”, pick a grade, and select a released test. TEA’s released-questions page also posts answer keys and item rationales for each year.
Do I need an account to take a STAAR practice test?
No. The Texas Assessment Practice Test Site has a “Continue as Guest” option — no account or student ID. When we checked, it opened in an ordinary web browser.
Are the STAAR practice tests the same as the real test?
The released tests are real past STAAR tests, and they run on the STAAR Online Testing Platform — the same system used on test day — with the same tools and question types. Since the 2023 redesign that includes non-multiple-choice questions such as equation editor, drag-and-drop and multiselect.
What should my child do after finishing the released tests?
Use the released tests to find weak reporting categories, then practise those skills with a free resource such as Khan Academy’s TEKS courses, Zearn (grades K–5), or free STAAR-style question sets — and save one released test to retake near test day.
