HSPT Prep Guide — Catholic High School Placement Test

The HSPT (High School Placement Test) is the admissions and scholarship test used by most Catholic high schools. Eighth graders take it when applying for ninth grade, and results often influence not just admission but course placement and merit aid.

It's a fast test — roughly 300 questions in about two and a half hours — so pacing matters as much as content. Unlike the SSAT, there is no penalty for wrong answers, so students should answer every question.

HSPT FAQ

What's a good HSPT score?

HSPT results are reported as national percentiles. Many schools consider the 75th+ percentile strong, and scholarship consideration often starts around the 90th percentile — but each school sets its own bar.

Is there a penalty for guessing on the HSPT?

No. Unlike the SSAT, wrong answers don't subtract points, so students should never leave a question blank.

When is the HSPT taken?

Most students take it in the fall or early winter of 8th grade, on a date set by the school or diocese. Many schools allow only one sitting, so preparation ahead of the first attempt matters.
