Iowa Assessments (ITBS) — A Parent's Guide to Prep & Scores

The Iowa Assessments (long known as the ITBS — Iowa Test of Basic Skills) measure what a child has actually learned: reading, language, math, and in many schools science and social studies. Scores are reported against national norms.

Many districts pair the Iowa with an ability test like the CogAT for gifted identification — ability plus achievement — so a strong Iowa score can matter well beyond the report card.

Iowa Assessments (ITBS) FAQ

What's the difference between the ITBS and the Iowa Assessments?

Same test family — 'Iowa Assessments' is the modern name for what generations knew as the ITBS. Schools use the names interchangeably.

What do grade-equivalent scores mean?

A grade equivalent like 5.7 means your child scored as well as a typical 5th grader in the 7th month would on the same material — it does NOT mean they're ready for 5th-grade work. Percentile rank is the clearer number.

Is the Iowa used for gifted programs?

Often, yes — many districts require both a high ability score (CogAT/NNAT) and a high achievement score (Iowa, often 95th+ percentile) to qualify.
