Math Kangaroo Prep — A Parent's Guide to the Competition

Math Kangaroo is the world's largest math competition — millions of students across 100+ countries sit the same fun, puzzle-style paper every March. In the US and Canada it runs for grades 1–12, and for many kids it's their first taste of competition math.

Kangaroo problems aren't school math: they're clever logic puzzles dressed in stories. That makes them great preparation for gifted testing too — the reasoning overlaps heavily with CogAT-style quantitative and nonverbal thinking.

Math Kangaroo FAQ

When is Math Kangaroo held?

Once a year, on the third Thursday of March, at registered centers (many schools and online options). Registration typically opens in the fall and closes in December.

Is Math Kangaroo hard?

The early problems are friendly and the last few are genuinely tricky — by design. A student who solves the 3- and 4-point problems cleanly lands a strong score.

Does Math Kangaroo help with gifted testing?

Yes — the puzzle-style reasoning builds exactly the quantitative and spatial thinking that tests like the CogAT and NNAT measure.
