How to prep for the MATHCOUNTS
- Train with timed drills — untimed practice builds knowledge, timed practice builds contest scores.
- Master mental-math shortcuts (fraction/percent conversions, squares to 25, divisibility rules) until automatic.
- Alternate topic focus weeks (counting, then geometry, then number theory) with mixed timed sets.
- Review every miss the same day and re-solve it from scratch two days later.
- Simulate a full Sprint round weekly in the month before your chapter competition.

Who can compete in MATHCOUNTS?
US students in grades 6–8, through registered schools (and non-school competitor programs), advancing from chapter to state to nationals.
How is it different from MOEMS?
MATHCOUNTS is faster, deeper, and for middle schoolers only — more topics, tighter time, team rounds. MOEMS is a gentler on-ramp for grades 4–8.
Is MATHCOUNTS worth it if my child won't reach state?
Absolutely — the fluency and problem-solving stamina transfer straight to algebra readiness, gifted-program work, and later competitions like AMC 8.
