WISC-V — A Parent's Guide to the Test & How to Get Ready

The WISC-V (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition) is a one-on-one IQ assessment administered by a psychologist — usually for gifted program admission at private schools, or as part of a psychoeducational evaluation. It's a conversation-style session, not a bubble sheet.

You can't (and shouldn't) coach specific WISC-V items — but you absolutely can prepare the underlying skills it draws on, and prepare your child for the experience so nerves don't mask ability.

WISC-V FAQ

What WISC-V score is considered gifted?

A Full Scale IQ of 130+ (98th percentile) is the classic gifted threshold; some programs accept 125+, and some look at index scores like the General Ability Index instead. Requirements vary by program.

Can you practice for the WISC-V?

The test items themselves are confidential and coaching them is counterproductive — but strengthening reasoning, vocabulary, memory, and comfort with the one-on-one format is legitimate and helps a child show their true ability.

Who administers the WISC-V?

A licensed psychologist, individually — sessions run roughly 45–65 minutes. Schools usually specify accepted examiners for admissions testing.
