Where Gifted Testing Actually Happens: The Largest US School Districts

Gifted identification is run district by district, so where the large districts are is where most families meet this process at all. We analysed the 1,945 largest US school districts — those serving 5,000 students or more — using federal enrollment data.

Key findings

• These 1,945 districts serve 32,563,537 students between them.
• Enrollment is heavily concentrated: the 50 biggest districts alone account for 21% of that total.
• The median district in this set enrolls about 9,509 students — big enough to run a formal gifted program, small enough that its process is rarely documented anywhere public.
• Suburban districts dominate the list — which is also where gifted-program competition is most intense.

Methodology

Figures are computed live from the iPrepGenius question bank (131,000+verified, unretired practice questions at the time you loaded this page).
