SSAT or ISEE? We Checked What 200 Top Private Schools Actually Require

Ask which admission test your child needs and you'll be told “it depends on the school” — which is true and completely useless. So we checked. We went through the stated admission requirements of 200 selective US private schools in our profile set — each one linked to its own admissions page — and counted what they actually ask for.

Key findings

• The ISEE is accepted or required by 144 of 200 schools (72%), more than any other test — the SSAT by 98 (49%).
• 44 schools accept BOTH the SSAT and the ISEE. If your shortlist is in that group, the choice is yours — pick the format that suits your child, not the school.
• 54 schools take only the SSAT and 100 only the ISEE. A single school on your list can therefore decide the whole prep plan — check before you start.
• 99 schools use an early-childhood assessment (WPPSI/WISC/ERB-style, one-on-one with a psychologist) for their youngest entry points — a completely different process from a group-administered test.
• Only 4 in this set use the HSPT — it dominates Catholic high-school admissions, which is a separate world from independent-school admissions.

So which one should your child take?

Start from your school list, never from the test. Once you know which tests your shortlist accepts, the deciding factors are format, not prestige: the SSAT penalises wrong answers, so strategic skipping matters; the ISEE has no guessing penalty, so every question should be answered, and it includes a separate Mathematics Achievement section that rewards grade-level curriculum work. Children who freeze under “should I guess?” pressure often do better on the ISEE; strong test-takers with uneven curriculum coverage often prefer the SSAT.
