Which Gifted Test Is Hardest? We Compared the Difficulty Data

“Is the CogAT harder than the NNAT?” is asked on parenting forums constantly, and answered almost entirely from anecdote. Every question in our bank carries a calibrated 1–5 difficulty rating, so we can compare directly: here is the difficulty profile of 69,437 questions across every gifted and admissions test we cover.

Key findings

• SSAT carries the highest average difficulty (2.57 of 5), with 15.1% of its content rated hard.
• ISEE is the gentlest (2.2 of 5) — largely because it reaches younger children, not because it's less selective.
• The spread across tests is narrower than parents expect. What differs far more than difficulty is format — and format is what preparation can actually change.
• Above-grade-level and admissions tests skew harder than grade-level gifted screeners, which is expected: they're designed to separate students at the top rather than to identify them.

Why “hardest” is the wrong question

A test only feels hard when it's unfamiliar. In practice the child who struggles isn't usually facing harder reasoning — they're facing a question format they've never seen, under time pressure, for the first time. That's why familiarity moves scores more than difficulty rankings ever should, and why the useful question is “which test does my district use, and has my child seen those formats?” rather than “which is hardest?”

Methodology

Figures are computed live from the iPrepGenius question bank (131,000+verified, unretired practice questions at the time you loaded this page). Our banks are original practice content modeled on each test's published blueprint and format; they are not actual test items, and findings describe our bank's composition — a faithful proxy for, but not a publication of, the tests themselves. Difficulty ratings use our 1–5 scale assigned at generation and refined by calibration. Aggregated practice statistics, where shown, are fully anonymized.
